Cultural programmes

The Alemania supplements its German courses with an accompanying cultural programme. The programme includes an introduction to the city's culturally relevant sites as well as sightseeing tours to surrounding areas.

The outings are designed to introduce students to the city of Zurich, Lucerne or Berne and its history, in order to increase their understanding of the city's cultural heritage.

Some of these outings are part of the intensive course and will be conducted by the responsible teacher once a month. Other outings will take place outside of the course timetable. Relatives are welcome to participate.

The following outings are planned for next year.

The Gletschergarten (Glacier Museum) is a natural monument of national importance, discovered in 1872. With its "Million Year Show", the museum offers a journey from a sub-tropical, palm-lined beach by the sea to the glacier-filled world of the last Ice Age. Wonder at remnants of the Ice Age of 20,000 years ago, such as glacial potholes, 20 million year-old marine mussels and palm leaves.

Then there are the large murals depicting the ancient history of Luzern, including Switzerland’s oldest mountain relief: "Luzern anno 1792". The picnic terrace is also a pleasant place to linger for a while.

Musegg Towers
Located on the right bank of the River Reuss, the old city stands on an ascending layer of sandstone. Up here, where the views are magnificent, individual watch towers were constructed as long ago as the 13th century, offering a view down over the city and far into the surrounding countryside.

As the city, founded in 1178, continued to expand, the Musegg Wall was built, adding further towers. Nine stone structures now stand on the Musegg: the Nölliturm, Männliturm, Luegisland, Heuturm, Zytturm, Schirmerturm, Pulverturm, Allenwindenturm and the Dächliturm.

Rosengart Collection
The youngest museum in the city of Luzern can thank its worldwide importance to the unique works of Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso. While the Klee collection, with around 120 paintings, watercolours and drawings, documents all the artist’s creative periods, the Picasso painting collection concentrates on works created by the artist after 1938, complemented by a series of drawings from earlier eras.

In addition, an entire floor is given over to the representative works of over 20 artists including Cézanne, Monet, Renoir, Matisse, Braque, Léger and Miró.

A walk along the spectacular cliff path is a must for any visitor. The drop back down to the lake, which lies approximately 500m lower down, is more or less vertical. The path leads to the highest outside lift in Europe and to the “Hammetschwand”, which is the highest point in Lucerne.

Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (Swiss Transport Museum)
The fascinating story of transport, including the vehicles and their socio-political impact on our culture, constitutes the central theme at the most versatile transport and communications museum in Europe.
